Overview
Meetmi is an innovative DIY candied fruit maker designed to bring a personal touch to the art of gifting. Drawing inspiration from traditional practices where candied fruits were made as heartfelt gifts symbolizing love and farewells, Meetmi streamlines the process by integrating all steps from preparation to seasoning. Paired with unique seasoning kits tailored for different fruits, Meetmi allows users to craft personalized candied fruits that capture the essence of their sentiments. Whether it’s for a loved one or a special occasion, Meetmi makes the process of creating and sharing sweet treats easy, meaningful, and memorable.
Challenges
1
Boost User Engagement
Identify and enhance key moments in the user journey to keep them engaged
2
Simplify Processes
Make the candied fruit-making process easy and user-friendly
3
Personalized Gifting
Create unique, personalized gifting experiences
4
Model Development
Build from digital designs to physical prototypes efficiently
Background
In recent years, “candied fruit”, a product of Taiwanese traditional culture, has gradually declined. Not only is the hygienic quality of the store's production process worrying, but people who want to make it themselves are always discouraged by the complicated steps.
Process
Understand
Dive into user needs and problems to gain insights and context
Define
Clearly articulate the problem and set the direction for solutions
Ideate
Generate creative ideas and explore potential solutions
Prototype
Create tangible models and interfaces to test and refine ideas
User Research
Through observation, interviews, and other research methods, we gather valuable insights about our target users. By identifying their needs, pain points, and motivations, we establish clear design goals that guide the development process.
Interview
To understand user behaviors and habits, we conducted interviews with:
10
people
21-56
years old
80%
were female
Target Users
While traditional candied fruit production often involves large quantities and frequent repackaging, typically favored by homemakers, our goal is to reach a different user segment focused on small-batch production, primarily for gifting purposes. By positioning candied fruit as a novel and meaningful gift option, we aim to appeal to users who value personalization and the joy of crafting unique presents, expanding beyond conventional home use.
Observation & Analysis
In observing users during the candied fruit making process, we identified a significant issue: the steps are complex, with numerous tools and disorganized workflows, causing users to feel overwhelmed. This complexity not only increases the difficulty of the process but may also impact the final product's quality and the user's overall experience.
Persona
Based on our interviews and analysis, we developed the persona of Lisa. This persona helps us understand the needs and preferences of users who prioritize both practicality and personal connection in their daily lives.
User Journey Map
We organized and created a user journey map based on the persona and the process map of the candied fruit-making process. This map details the user’s experience at each step and interactions with various touchpoints. Through the user journey map, we can identify the user's pain points and uncover potential opportunities.
Pain Points vs. Magic Moments
User pain points and magic moments are listed to help us discover design entry points.
Pain points:
Need to look up recipes online to know how to make candied fruit
The steps for preparing the fruit are complex and time-consuming
The fruit needs to be sliced to the same thickness to avoid uneven drying
Repeating the actions of picking up and arranging the fruit is very time-consuming and labor-intensive
Cleaning numerous tools is troublesome
Magic moments:
Users can customize different flavors based on the various types of fruit
Watching the fruit gradually change color due to caramelization during cooking is enjoyable
Checking the drying results is motivating
Tasting the ready candied fruits is exciting
Users can convey their intentions through the packaging and receive joy from feedback after giving the gift
Design Goal
We used these user pain points and magic moments as our insights to develop the design goal.
In order to achieve the design goals, we developed four design concepts and proposed four corresponding solutions.
Ideation
In this phase, we explored multiple design concepts through rapid sketching to visualize initial ideas. These sketches represent early iterations that helped us brainstorm solutions and refine the user experience, laying the foundation for more detailed designs.
Prototype
Throughout the prototyping phase, each component of the candied fruit machine and the website design underwent multiple iterations to ensure functionality, usability, and aesthetic appeal. From the machine model to the webpage layout, every detail was refined and improved based on feedback and testing. This iterative process allowed us to produce a final prototype that meets both user needs and design goals, resulting in a satisfying and well-rounded product.
Service Design
In addition to designing the product itself, we thoughtfully considered the entire service ecosystem that complements it. From the initial information search, to personalized candied fruit flavor recommendations, and finally to the packaging and gift-giving experience, we crafted a seamless and refined journey for users.
By combining seasoning packs, recipes, and gift boxes, users don't need to check recipes on their phones or computers while making candied fruits. After using up the internal seasoning packs, the seasoning packs can be used directly as gift boxes.
Product Features
In addition to designing the product itself, we thoughtfully considered the entire service ecosystem that complements it. From the initial information search, to personalized candied fruit flavor recommendations, and finally to the packaging and gift-giving experience, we crafted a seamless and refined journey for users.
Takeaway
This project taught me the value of balancing user needs with product functionality. By continuously iterating and refining both the product and the service around it, I learned how thoughtful design can transform a complex process into an enjoyable experience. The importance of creating seamless, user-centered journeys was reinforced throughout, from initial ideation to the final prototype. Ultimately, this case study highlights the power of design in not only solving problems but also in creating meaningful, memorable experiences.
